Former judge Jacques Delisle is a free man

Former judge Jacques Delisle, convicted of the first degree murder of his wife in 2012, will not have to undergo a new trial. The decision of the Superior Court puts an end to a legal saga that began in 2009, after the discovery of the remains of Nicole Rainville in her residence in Sillery.

Justice had condemned the former magistrate in 2012 for the first degree murder of Ms. Rainville. Jacques Delisle was then to serve a life sentence without the possibility of release for 25 years.

Mr. Delisle and his lawyers had exhausted all their remedies in 2013. First dismissed in the Court of Appeal, he had seen the Supreme Court refuse to hear his case.

Then, the situation reversed in April 2021: the federal Minister of Justice, David Lametti, had ordered the holding of a new trial, on the pretext that there were “reasonable grounds to conclude that a miscarriage of justice occurred. probably produced”.

The discovery of new information that was not before the courts at the time of Jacques Delisle’s trial and his appeal motivated the federal minister’s decision.

More details will follow.
