Judge Renaud Van Ruymbeke died at the age of 71 on the morning of Friday May 10. He was one of the emblematic judges in the fight against corruption, investigating the Elf and Urba cases.
Even after his retirement, Renaud Van Ruymbeke tirelessly fought against tax fraud. He was a respected investigating judge and feared for his insight. His name will forever be associated with the most sensitive financial affairs of the Republic: Kerviel, Cahuzac, and even Balkany. But also Elf, Urba, Clearstream, or even the frigates of Taiwan.
A figure in the fight against corruption
The former financial magistrate who retired in 2019 is recognized for his great integrity and tenacity. “France loses a great magistrate and Justice a great servant”wrote Éric Dupond-Moretti on X. For his former student and honorary magistrate Evelyne Sire-Marin, “all these cases led to the fact that financial justice was a justice that reestablished the equality of all before justice, whether powerful or miserable”. A pillar of the Paris financial center for nearly 20 years, Renaud Van Ruymbeke was committed to the independence of justice.
