Former Haitian President Michel Martelly sanctioned by Canada

JERBA | Canada continues to escalate sanctions in response to the crisis in which Haiti is plunged. During a special meeting, Justin Trudeau announced new sanctions against the Haitian political elite, including ex-president Michel Martelly and two former prime ministers.

According to our information, in addition to singer Michel Martelly, who led the country from 2011 to 2016, former prime ministers Jean-Henry Céant (2018-19) Laurent Lamothe (2012-14) will also see their assets frozen in Canada.

These sanctions are in addition to those announced by Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly on Saturday.

“We know that armed gangs control countries in the country, which limits access to food and medicine for the population,” lamented Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, opening a special meeting on the situation in Haiti. which he chaired on the sidelines of the 18th Francophonie Summit in Djerba, Tunisia.

Mr. Trudeau took the opportunity to extend an additional $8 million in humanitarian aid, among other things to help fight cholera, the number of cases of which continues to multiply.

Added to this is an amount of $5 million over three years to help Haiti fight against crime and corruption, plus $3.5 million in legal aid, in particular with Avocats sans frontières Canada.
