Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard sentenced to 11 years in prison

Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for his sexual assault convictions.

After multiple delays in the case, the 83-year-old was found guilty of four counts last November. But the sentencing process has also dragged on for several reasons, including Nygard’s difficulty retaining lawyers.

Sentencing was postponed again last month because one of the Crown prosecutors was out of the country.

Nygard’s most recent lawyer had asked for a six-year prison sentence, citing her client’s age and health issues, while the Crown had asked for a 15-year sentence.

Nygard, who once ran a successful women’s fashion company, has been accused of sexually assaulting several women at his company’s Toronto headquarters from the 1980s to the mid-2000s.

He was ultimately convicted in November of four counts of sexual assault, but acquitted of a fifth count as well as one count of unlawful confinement.

More details to come.
