It was with a “heart full of gratitude and a mind full of memories” that Sheryl Sandberg, 54, wrote that she “let the Meta board of directors know” that she would not run for re-election in May.

“After leaving my position as director of operations, I remained on the board of directors to help ensure a successful transition,” continues the woman who was hired by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in 2008 and joined the board in 2012. .

She now believes that “Meta’s business is strong and well positioned for the future. So this seems like a good time to step aside. In the future, I will serve as an advisor to the company and will always be there to help the Meta teams,” concludes the message published by the businesswoman.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg responded in a comment. “Thank you Sheryl for the extraordinary contributions you have made to our company and our community over the years. Your dedication and guidance have been instrumental in our success and I am grateful for your unwavering commitment to me and Meta over the years,” he salutes.

Mme Sandberg has made the popular social network, which celebrates its 20th anniversary on February 4, an advertising machine, symbol of the large Internet platforms and their controversial economic model.

At the time of his resignation in 2022, the boss and founder of the company recalled that in 2008, when he hired his number 2, he was only 23 years old and knew “nothing about corporate governance”.

She was 38 and had a career with prestigious organizations, from the World Bank to the consulting group McKinsey. She also worked at the US Treasury as personnel director and at Google as vice president of international sales and operations.

After establishing itself as the leading global social network in the 2000s, Facebook expanded and acquired other services, such as Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus, to remain essential.
