Former Dutch international Marc Overmars banned from playing football for a year for ‘inappropriate messages’

Suspended in the Netherlands for sending “inappropriate messages” to colleagues when he was sporting director of Ajax Amsterdam, the current technical director of the Belgian club Royal Antwerp saw this sanction extended to the world on Wednesday.

Former Dutch international Marc Overmars, suspended for two years (one of which was suspended) in the Netherlands from any football-related activity for sending sexual images to colleagues, was subjected to the same sanction around the world entirely by Fifa, the Dutch Federation (KNVB) announced on Wednesday January 10.

The Dutch Sports Court (ISR) decided to ban the former winger from holding any position with an organization affiliated with the Dutch Football Federation for two years, one of which was suspended. “The KNVB has the obligation to share this sanction with the Fifa Disciplinary Committee. They then decide whether this sanction should also be imposed at international levelexplained the Dutch Federation to AFP. It is now done and the Disciplinary Commission has decided to extend the sanction.”she added.

The former Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona player was banned, in November 2023, from carrying out any activity related to Dutch football for a year, after sending photos and videos of a sexual nature to employed during the time he was sporting director of Ajax Amsterdam (since 2012). International on 86 occasions with Orangeshe resigned from his post in February 2022, after admitting to having sent a “series of inappropriate messages” to some of his colleagues and declared that he “shame” of his behavior. He was, however, appointed a month later as technical director of the Belgian club Royal Antwerp.
