Former Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson is no longer

(Ottawa) Former Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson has died.


The commissioner’s office said Friday on its website that Mr.me Dawson died on December 24.

Mary Dawson was appointed Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner in July 2007 by former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper. She held this position until January 2018.

She previously had a long career in the senior federal public service, notably as associate deputy minister of the Department of Justice.

During her tenure within this ministry, she contributed to the drafting of important legislative texts, notably the Access to Information Actthere Personal Information Protection Actthere Canada Health Act and the Official Languages ​​Act.

During his mandate as Ethics Commissioner, Mr.me Dawson has made numerous decisions, most recently regarding the Christmas vacation of Justin Trudeau and his family on the Aga Khan’s private island in the Bahamas in 2016. The commissioner then concluded that the Prime Minister had violated the rules relating to conflicts of interest in accepting this stay.

The press release from the office of the ethics commissioner recalls that Mme Dawson “implemented many of the practices adopted by the Office today.”
