(Washington) Hostage by Islamist militants for six years, the former head of the Beirut bureau of the Associated Press, Terry Anderson, died at the age of 76, the American agency announced on Sunday.
Mr. Anderson died at his home in Greenwood Lake (northeast) following complications after heart surgery, AP reported, citing his daughter Sulome.
He was hostage to Islamic Jihad in Lebanon from 1985 to 1991.
A former marine, kidnapped after a game of tennis, he had become one of the symbols of the risks faced by journalists and other Western nationals in Lebanon.
After his release, he wrote his memoirs titled The lion’s dena bestseller recounting his captivity.
Mr. Anderson worked for AP in the United States, Japan and South Africa before moving to Lebanon in 1982 to cover the Israeli invasion. He remained there as the country descended into chaos.
