“Formentera II”, Metric | The duty

There is something frankly pleasing in hearing a group founded a quarter of a century ago that manages to renew itself, both in sound and in writing. On the first Formentera published in July 2022, Metric was already daring a scathing groove ten-minute krautrock opener, before returning to its indie rock roots; the second volume starts very differently, with a Detour Up with pop-new wave tones that hit the mark, melodious and bright like the season which still allowed the windows to be kept wide open. And it continues with dancing, almost disco Just the Oncethe pinched voice of Emilie Haines and the orchestrations recalling the atmosphere of the excellent album Heavy Light (2020) by US Girls. Here, the drum machines and colorful synths not only set the tone, but inspire Torontonians to dare the pop chorus without restraint, even in the slower songs, those where the drums and guitars regain their acquired rights a little.
