(Ottawa) The Conservative Party is ready to work with other opposition MPs to establish the terms of reference for a possible investigation into foreign interference.
Party leader Pierre Poilievre said Sunday he would contact New Democrats and the Bloc Québécois next week and begin work.
The Liberal government says it is ready to hold a public inquiry into allegations that China interfered in two recent federal elections, but it wants opposition parties to propose its mandate, timeline and potential leader.
The government is undertaking work to find possible shortcomings in the way it deals with allegations of foreign interference and initially appointed former Governor General David Johnston as a special rapporteur to investigate the matter.
But Mr Johnston resigned from his post on Friday, citing the highly partisan atmosphere around his work.
Poilievre says he wants the government to launch a public inquiry quickly and before the next federal election.
