For Thierry Henry, seeing Kylian Mbappé or Antoine Griezmann during the opening ceremony of the Games is not a crazy idea. The Bleuets coach estimated at a press conference on Monday March 18 that “playing the Euro and the Olympics was possible“, but that the clubs remained the final decision-makers. Comments which face those of Didier Deschamps, who declared last Thursday that he was “very difficult to string together two competitions” like the Euro (June 14-July 14) and the Olympic Games (July 24-August 9).
The coach of the French Olympic team was questioned about the decision of Real Madrid, where Kylian Mbappé could join next season, not to release its players for the Olympics. Henry this time kicked in, explaining that “It’s difficult to prepare because we don’t have certainty. Yes, there are quite a few names we would like to have. But we don’t know when the yes will arrive. And if the player changes clubs… It’s not easy, but we knew it.”
The French under-23s will play two friendly matches, against Ivory Coast, on March 22 in Châteauroux, and against the United States, on March 25 in Sochaux. Two matches which mark the start of their preparation for the Olympic tournament, the draw for which will take place on Wednesday in Paris (broadcast on france.tv and France 3 from 8 p.m.).
