For the very first time, the mother of little Lucas who ended his life and moved all of France, speaks out!

A tragedy that shocked the French. On January 7, 2023, Lucas, 13, ended his life in Golbey, in the Vosges. His parents had quickly confirmed that the teenager had been harassed for several months because of his homosexuality. It’s in the newspaper Morning Vosges that her mother, Séverine, decided to speak for the very first time since this terrible death which bereaved her whole family but even more… Under the influence of grief, she decided to send a message of hope: “You have to be free. You have to love yourself. We must live“. And above all to call on the victims of harassment, like his son, to “to speak”, do not hesitate to ask for help: “We are all different and we all have the right to be as we are.“, she says before adding: “Talk it over ! Don’t be afraid, talk to anyone! You have to free yourself. Don’t take it as a fault. Let them live as they wish. Let them live as they see fit”. And to insist by specifying that there is “an attentive ear, always someone who can help, family, friends, a psychologist, the police… Do not fear reprisals”. Séverine insists on the freedom to be and to exist in our societies despite our differences: “To be free as we are, free as we want and regardless of the eyes of others. You have to be free. You have to love yourself. We must live“, affirms the mother of Lucas who concludes: “We must keep this hope to tell ourselves that in life we do what we want, we are as we want and we are who we want, that’s all”.

Lucas had left a note in his diary

The inquest into the boy’s death is still ongoing.

Frédéric Nahon, the public prosecutor revealed the causes on January 13, 2023: “The observations made and the autopsy carried out at the Forensic Institute of Nancy, made it possible to establish the thesis of a suicide by hanging”.He also clarified that the teenager “had left a note in a diary explaining his desire to end his life”. For her part, Lucas’s mother does not “wish to interfere” in the procedure, waiting for “justice to be done”. And for the attention of her son’s stalkers, she sends this message: “Show harassers the scope of their actions and make them understand the penalties that are incurred, all that they risk as harassers, all that is risked as harassed“. As a reminder, Lucas’ parents had alerted the National Education Department to the harassment he was undergoing but no complaint had been filed. The offense of school harassment is punishable by ten years’ imprisonment and 150,000 euros in fine when the facts lead to the victim’s suicide or attempted suicide.
