Since November 1 and until March 31, special equipment is mandatory for all vehicles circulating in certain municipalities in 34 mountain departments (Alps, Corsica, Massif Central, Jura Massif, Pyrenees, Vosges Massif). The entire road network is affected in Savoie and Haute-Savoie, specifies France Bleu.

This winter obligation, which results from the Mountain II law, has been in force since 2021. In the areas concerned, it is obligatory to equip your vehicle with winter tires or to have snow chains or socks. But for the third year in a row, “no sanctions will be applied during this 2023-2024 winter season“, indicates the Road Safety website.

The government “extends its educational approach” and so “allow time to adapt to the requirement to have winter equipment“. Nevertheless, “this tolerance must not make us forget the spirit of this regulation“, to know “continue to improve the safety of road users in winter“, concludes the message.
