How to build, without encroaching more on natural spaces, on forests? Some have decided to rebuild on the old industrial wastelands. For that, of course, it is often necessary to clean, depollute, but the stake is worth the candle.

Between Saint-Ouen and Saint-Denis, in Seine-Saint-Denis, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games village will soon be built. It takes place on the very site of a former oil depot which for nearly a century supplied the entire Paris region. New buildings built on old industrial wastelands, a popular solution to limit the concreteization and sprawl of cities. On one plot, 25 tonnes of essences were sucked up. We must now extract the rest of the soil still polluted.

But it is impossible to deal with everything on the spot. Some plots are evacuated to factories before being used again on the site. This mode of operation has a cost. “Overall, it costs one million euros per hectare. But it can go down to 500,000 as it can go up to four million euros “, explains Laurent Galdemas, consulting engineer in depollution-reconversion wasteland EODD.
