For Quebecers in need | Housing allowance and subsidized rent supplements

(Quebec) After announcing on Wednesday the construction by the Government of Quebec and partners of 3,000 social and affordable housing units, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Andrée Laforest, comes back on Thursday by improving the housing allowance and supplements rent for Quebecers in need.

The housing allowance, which had been increased last fall, will now be able to reach $170 per month, which corresponds to an increase of 70%, according to the minister. It estimates that 134,000 households will be eligible for this financial assistance to pay their rent in 2022-2023.

The government is also increasing the eligible rent under the Rent Supplement Program, which allows an eligible household to live in a dwelling with only 25% of its income to pay. The eligibility cost of housing under this program is therefore increased to 150% of the median rent.

Thursday’s government announcement adds to the Action Plan for the 1er July announced on May 19 by Minister Laforest and a campaign by the Société d’habitation du Québec to help households find housing or pay their rent.
