The first 10,000 doses of Paxlovid are available in France since Friday, February 4. It is a treatment which is intended for the most fragile, the immunocompromised, for whom the vaccine is not sufficient protection and whose life has been taken hostage since the start of the pandemic. A life of anguish and confinement that never ends.
For nearly two years, Lydie Combe has lived a daily life between four walls. At 52, she is one of the immunocompromised, she is in remission from cancer. This nurse can no longer practice and remains confined. She lives in fear of being contaminated, including by her own family. Her daughter, 23, put her life on hold to protect her mother. The whole family lives under a bell.
There would be 300,000 immunocompromised people in France. Frederic Floquet, suffering from cystic fibrosis, is one of them. One of the few outings he allows himself: the grocery store. He has already received four vaccine injections, but his immune system remains fragile. Faced with the outbreak of contamination, he chose to confine himself again. “It’s something that reassures me but it’s a bit forced unfortunately“, he admits. According to patient associations, immunocompromised people now represent 30% of intensive care cases.
