for François Hollande, “the unacceptable agreement” between the PS and LFI is destined to fail

“I think this agreement will not be accepted”, declared the socialist François Hollande, former president of the Republic, Thursday, April 28 on franceinfo, the day after the start of negotiations between La France insoumise and the Socialist Party, with the aim of sealing an agreement for the legislative elections. According to him, this “deal” is “unacceptable in terms of what it represents electorally”.

“Discussing is necessary, disappearing is impossible”he launched. “The electoral agreement, if I have followed correctly, is to say: we start from the results of the presidential election and for the first time in the history of the left, there will be no more plural candidacies , there will be single candidacies from the People’s Union”the banner behind which La France insoumise proposes to the forces of the left to gather, he added.

For him, “that would mean that in three quarters of the constituencies in France, there would no longer be a socialist candidate in the first round, no more candidates, moreover, ecologist or communist”.

“Never in the history of the left have we had this type of behavior, including when the Socialist Party made 25% or 30% and its supposed or real allies made 5% or 6%.”

This agreement is also “unacceptable” on the plan “programmatic”according to François Hollande, because “it calls into question the very principles which are the foundations of socialist commitment”. “If the programs are made to be applied, what would that mean, in the current state of the negotiations? That would mean that the next government would be led to question the European treaties, to disobey the European treaties? The next government , if it were constituted, if it had a majority, would it be necessary to leave NATO, to no longer help the Ukrainians by providing them with military equipment? This is the position of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the Insoumis”, he pointed out. He also criticized retirement at age 60, advocated by LFI, because “everyone knows that it is impossible, financially”.

“It is a questioning of the very history of socialism: of François Mitterrand and his European commitments, of Lionel Jospin and his economic credibility and social progress, and of what I was also able to do in my five-year term”he insisted.

For all these reasons, the former head of state “excludes” to run for the legislative elections under the colors of the People’s Union. However, he did not close the door to an application, especially in Corrèze, under another label.
