We are led to believe that the problems in education stem from a lack of manpower and resources, when in fact they are caused more by the failing structure and organization of the education system. The burden of the workload, the lack of appropriate support, and the lack of recognition and consideration of the expertise of school staff should be more widely recognized as causes of these problems.
These people give their heart and soul to educating Quebec youth, and we dare to play on their sensitive chord of empathy and dedication by making them feel guilty for never doing enough or doing badly. Shame on you! Don’t come and tell me afterwards that you have a shortage of education personnel when you can’t even recognize the wealth of those who carry the sector on their shoulders. If only you would take the time to ask them what they need and listen to the solutions they have thought of. So start by supporting those who are still there and taking care of them in order to keep them in the system.
Look at all those who have left and are leaving. It is not for lack of interest or passion. On the contrary! They are leaving because they have understood that they are exhausting themselves rowing in a sinking ship. They have understood that the problem cannot be solved at their level. It is time to analyze the cogs of the machine in order to make it functional. It is all well and good, trying to repair what is and adding structures to compensate for those that are failing. It is time to think about new ways of doing things adapted to the reality and needs of today’s young people, while considering the situation of the job market. It is through education that a society evolves. But currently, the quality of education is declining and that worries me.
