“Welcome to Radio Ukraine”. In the big Stalinist radio building everyone is working all the time. “We are present 24 hours a day, seven days a week”, blows Yuri Tabachenko, 38, the boss of the chain. It’s been 500 days, Saturday July 8, since Russia invaded Ukraine. Since February 24, 2022 the media have been mobilized to tell this war. “We didn’t think it would take long. But 500 days after the start of the war, our life is a battle. This is our new reality.”

Fighting fake news
The three antennas that make up the public group continue to regularly broadcast joint programs to tell the news of the war. “The information was not very popular before the war, emphasizes Yuri Tabachenko. People liked music radios, entertainment. But in the occupied territories, it has become very important.
“In some places, we have become the only media that allows people to receive reliable information.”

Fighting disinformation and the overwhelming Russian propaganda has also become the group’s priority. “Every day our colleague Vadim Miski lists the main Russian fake news, explains journalist Serguiy Stukanov. Over 10-15 minutes, he explains to listeners why this Russian news is fake.”
Two channels, despite everything, resumed entertainment programs. “It is very important that people have access to positive information”believes Paulina Tosca, teacher, psychologist and host on the channel for young people. It allows them to feel better psychologically and morally. And it’s also very important that it’s the media that send them good vibes.”
Despite everything, the Radio Ukraine teams retain a certain feeling of guilt, “we are at the back”said a journalist. “Those who are at the front, they are the ones who have been doing the work for 500 days”.
