In 1982, the Toto group achieved worldwide fame with its hit “Africa”. Before this title, its members collaborated with many singers.
The mythical song Africa by Toto, released in 1982, is broadcast in the Namibian desert, a tribute from a German artist. The members of the Toto group first played musicians for other stars, before imposing their own hits, like 99 (1979) or Hold the line (1977). “It was great to hear our songs on the radio, we were like kids”remembers David Paich, musician, songwriter and founder of the group Toto.
In 1982, with Africa and Rosanna, the group’s fourth album made them known. “We thought it would be our last album if we didn’t make a hit, because our two previous records didn’t do too well”, explains David Paich. With success, the musicians are again solicited by pop stars, like Lionel Richie. Their collaboration with Michael Jackson on many songs remains the most prestigious.
