French international footballer Wissam Ben Yedder will be tried on October 15 for “sexual assault while intoxicated”, franceinfo learned from the Nice prosecutor’s office on Tuesday, September 10. He was arrested Saturday in Cap d’Ail (Alpes-Maritimes) while he was driving. The police officers who arrested him placed him in police custody for “sexual assault, refusal to comply and driving under the influence of alcohol”, the prosecutor’s office said.

“This arrest follows a complaint filed by a woman born in 2001 reporting acts of sexual assault committed by the person concerned in the eveningthe prosecution said. He was brought before the court early Sunday afternoon for a deferred appearance, with a psychological assessment of the victim to be carried out.”

Pending his trial, which will take place on October 15, the judge of liberties and detention (JLD) decided to place him under judicial supervision, the prosecution had requested his placement in provisional detention. The prosecution has also appealed the decision of the judge of liberties and detention, “because pre-trial detention appears to be the only way to avoid any risk of pressure on the victim or witnesses, to prevent the repetition of the facts while he is under judicial supervision for acts of rape and to guarantee his continued availability to the courts in view of the real risks of absconding”.

In the summer of 2023, Wissam Ben Yedder had been indicted for “rape, attempted rape and sexual assault” in another case and had already been placed under judicial supervision, after having paid bail of 900,000 euros.
