International footballer Franz Beckenbauer died on January 7 at the age of 78 in Austria. The man nicknamed the “Kaiser” was a world champion as a player and as a coach.
For all eternity, he will remain the man who played with a broken collarbone. It was in 1970 in the World Cup semi-final. Franz Beckenbauer is arguably the greatest German footballer of all time. In Berlin (Germany), his compatriots cry the “Kaiser”, the Emperor. “He was a football legend. I’m not a specialist, but everyone knows it here”, testifies a woman.
He lifts the World Cup twice
First an attacker then a midfielder, it is as a defender that he becomes a player apart. Comfortable, technically, he revolutionizes the position by leading the team from the back of the field, like a playmaker. He won two Golden Balls with Bayern Munich, but it was the 1974 World Cup, which he won in Germany, which definitely brought him into German hearts. He would accomplish this feat again in 1990, as coach.
