In the section “Behind our labels”, the 13 Hours journalist Dorothée Lachaud, present on the set, explains what is hidden behind designations such as the Protected Designation of Origin (AOP). The Limousin apple is also the only PDO apple in France.

The Limousin apple is the only apple with a protected designation of origin (AOP) in France. “Each sector wishing to launch must first prepare extremely precise specifications”, says 13H journalist Dorothée Lachaud, present on the set. For example, from harvesting to packaging, everything must take place in the same geographical area. Thus, it took 20 years for the Limousin apple to obtain its AOP.

No other requests for a new apple PDO

According to the National Institute of Origin and Quality, there are no other applications filed for a new apple PDO. But some apples have won a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) label, which requires that at least one of the production stages be carried out in a specific geographical area. For its part, the Red Label indicates a product of superior quality compared to its competitors.
