As of Tuesday, October 24, deputies are studying a text aimed at taxing the addition of sugar to prepared products.

Some salty products sometimes contain the equivalent of several cubes of sugar. “For sugar, I don’twas not at all aware. (…) We will have to do attention”, recognizes a customer in a supermarket. These sugars are often added to natural sugar to enhance the taste. To encourage manufacturers to review their recipes, some MPs are proposing to tax these added sugars in processed products. “It would be good for manufacturers to play the game,” believes a woman.

“Encourage manufacturers to eliminate sugar”

If manufacturers refuse to reduce added sugars, they could then increase the price of dishes to compensate for this tax. According to experts, it’s a bet worth trying. “We find small spoons of sugar almost everywhere in certain products. On this type of product, there is some leeway to remove the sugar. This type of tax can encourage manufacturers to eliminate sugar., explains Camille Dorioz, head of Foodwatch France campaigns. This tax proposal will be studied by deputies from Tuesday October 24.
