According to UFC-Que Choisir, Nutri-Score labeling encourages manufacturers to improve the nutritional value of their products. It is still necessary that all brands adopt the logo. The consumer association would like to make it compulsory in France and in Europe.
It’s a letter that changes everything: classified from A to E with color codes, the Nutri-Score is increasingly present on the shelves. It is scrutinized by health-conscious consumers. “From B, I no longer take”says a consumer. For Oliver Andraultfood policy officer at theUFC-Que Choose, “it is a powerful incentive to put pressure (…)improve quality and reduce fat, salt and sugar levels.“
Recipe change
Some manufacturers have indeed changed their recipe to have a better Nutri-Score. “We improved our Nutri-Score working with more whole grains, decreasing the salt and sugar content“, explains Guillaume Grandjean, nutrition engineer at Nestlé. But the Nutri-Score, non-mandatory, not on 40% food products, such as ice cream, sorbets, sauces and cereal bars. Identical labeling should be adopted throughout Europe.
