In the Dordogne, the strawberry harvest is in full swing. The prices are accessible, the taste is there, but the heat does not help the producers.
In a market in Périgord, in the Dordogne, strawberries are snapped up. CerafineGariguette, Magnum… the prices range around 3 euros per tray. A falling price at the peak of production. “May is strawberry month.says a saleswoman. The heat wave complicates things for producers, because the fruits grow faster and you have to harvest and sell faster. “It’s a concern because all the production is going to happen at the same time. We can’t pick everything on the same day and therefore we will be late”testifies Élodie Le Red- Teixeira, berry producer.
Normally, each region has its sales period. “Some years, like last year, it’s very spread out. Each region has its place (…) with this heating period, all regions are in full production”explains Sylvain toughtechnical manager of the cooperative Socave. Result : the market will be crowded this year. Producers are hoping for warmer temperatures in the days to come.
