Food: less meat and more first-price products in the face of inflation

Food prices are exploding well above headline inflation. In September, the latter is 5.6% over a year. Direct consequence: the French eat less meat, fish and cheese, and prefer distributor brands and first prices.

On the stalls of a Dijon butcher (Golden Coast)meat, which is more expensive, is struggling to sell. With inflation, the French are shaking up their consumption habits, and are forced to make choices. “They ate meat three to four times a week, now it will only be twice”explains Didier Prudhomme, butcher. In detail, it is above all fresh products, which are sometimes more expensive, that the French neglect the most.

Over the past three months, in supermarket fishmongers, sales have fallen by 12.4%. The drop is 10.6% for meat, 9% for cheese and 8.8% for fruits and vegetables. Consumers are also turning more to brands distributors and first prizes. Their sales jumped from 15.8% in one year. To Conversely, the major national brands experienced a decline of 3.5%. According to INSEE, inflation on food should rise further, and reach 12% by the end of the year.
