Repeated heat waves have consequences on honey harvests. Some bees don’t have enough nectar to forage, although other flowers are more resilient. Report in the Marne.

At Pitfall (Marl)there is not a drop of honey even though the hives have been installed for a month. Because of the drought, there is very little nectar in the buckwheat, which makes it difficult for bees to forage and therefore produce under these conditions. “With such a heat, there are a few of them who go looking for nectar, the others are in the hive and are ventilating to cool the hive because we reach incredible degrees inside so they don’t don’t look for nectar”says Ahmed Graine, beekeeper.

If the beekeeper loses 30% of his harvest this year, other professionals do not suffer from the scorching temperatures. In Tours-sur-Marne (Marl)Roman hater has set up his hives less than 3 kilometers from a field of alfalfa, a plant that thrives in hot weather. “Thanks to its large roots, it will capture moisture from the soil. This humidity will allow nectar to rise in the flowers. The bees, of course, need nectar, which they will collect from the plant to turn it into honey.”he explains. This beekeeper even sees an increase in his production. 2022 will therefore be a good year for him, but many others are suffering, as in 2021.
