(Pace) A Florida sheriff invited a homeowner who shot an intruder trying to enter his home to take a firearms safety course to “learn how to shoot much better (and) save money.” ‘taxpayer money’.

Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson made the comments a few days ago during a press conference regarding the arrest of a 32-year-old man who robbed homes in the town of Pace , near Pensacola, in Florida’s Panhandle region.
Several residents called 9-1-1 last Wednesday to report the burglaries. Police quickly set up a security perimeter, Mr Johnson said, catching the suspect in a trap. The man tried to escape the police by jumping over fences, from house to house.
“I don’t know which owner shot him. I imagine he thinks he did something wrong, but that’s not the case, Mr Johnson said. If someone tries to break into your home, don’t be shy about shooting them in Santa Rosa County. We would even prefer that you do it, to tell you the truth. »
He recalled that the sheriff’s office offers a firearms safety course every second Saturday.
“If you follow it, you’re going to shoot a lot better and hopefully save taxpayers money,” Sheriff Johnson added.
The police eventually captured the suspect, in another house. The man again tried to escape by diving through a window, inflicting serious lacerations.
The suspect has been in trouble with the police since he was 13, according to Johnson. He spent more than six years in prison and was wanted at the time of his arrest. He now faces multiple charges.
“He just doesn’t seem to understand that crime doesn’t pay,” Johnson said.
