(Halifax) The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Nova Scotia said a search is continuing for four people, including two children, missing after intense thunderstorms dumped record amounts of rain in the province.
Corporal Guillaume Tremblay did not release any further details about the situation, but said police would update the status of the search later today on Sunday.
The four people were reported missing Saturday in separate incidents in West Hants, a mostly rural town northwest of Halifax.
Police said the children were with three other people who managed to escape from a car stuck in the water. A second vehicle carrying four people was also submerged and two people escaped, but a youth and a man are still missing.
Meanwhile, West Hants municipal emergency authorities lifted an evacuation order for the area early Sunday.
Environment Canada says the downpour, which began Friday, dumped between 200 and 250 millimeters of rain along the province’s south shore, in the Halifax area and in central and western Nova Scotia.
Premier Tim Houston declared a province-wide state of emergency on Saturday, which will remain in effect until Aug. 5 unless the government ends or extends it.
