Storm Ciaran continues to wreak havoc. Heavy flooding has caused heavy damage in the Tuscany region of Italy. An orange weather alert and a state of emergency have been declared in the territory. Several hospitals were flooded, notably in Florence and Pisa, according to Corriere della sera . “I have declared a regional state of emergency and I am already in contact with the government for a national state of emergency. The situation is really very serious”announced the president of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, on X (ex-Twitter).

Several rivers have burst their banks. This is particularly the case of the Bisenzio river which reached 6 meters. Many roads are closed in the region and schools have been closed. “Driving throughout the metropolitan area is strongly discouraged. Maximum caution is recommended,” alerted the mayor of Florence Dario Nardella. “Very rainy and slow-moving storms generate major flooding,” explains Gaétan Heymes, forecasting engineer and snow scientist at Météo-france on X.
