Flames trade defenseman Chris Tanev to Stars

The Dallas Stars acquired defenseman Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames on Wednesday ahead of the March 8 NHL trade deadline.

In return, the Stars gave up a 2024 second-round pick, 20-year-old defensive prospect Artem Grushnikov, as well as a conditional 2026 third-round pick.

The New Jersey Devils are retaining 50% of Tanev’s salary, while the Stars gave them a fourth-round pick in 2026. The Devils also sent the young goaltender, without contract, Cole Brady to the Stars.

Aged 34, Tanev adds defensive depth and to the Stars’ special penalty-killing teams.

Other teams in the West had moved in recent weeks. The Vancouver Canucks acquired coveted center Elias Lindholm from the Flames, while the Winnipeg Jets responded by adding Montreal Canadiens center Sean Monahan.

Tanev will complete a defensive group that already includes Miro Heiskanen, veteran Ryan Suter, as well as Esa Lindell and Jani Hakanpaa.

Tanev is in the final season of a four-year, $18 million contract. He scored one goal and 13 assists in 56 games.
