(Calgary) The Calgary Flames claimed defenseman Joel Hanley off waivers from the Dallas Stars on Tuesday.
Hanley, who hails from Keswick, Ontario, has three assists and 23 penalty minutes in 32 games this season with the Stars.
Stars head coach Peter DeBoer said Hanley was “a salary cap casualty” when his name was placed on waivers Monday, adding that it was “a tough day” for the Texas team.
Hanley is in the final year of a two-year contract that pays him US$787,500 annually.
The 32-year-old veteran, who was never drafted, accepted a contract offer from the Montreal Canadiens as a free agent on 1er July 2015. He then played his first NHL game with the Habs on March 20, 2016.
Hanley scored two goals and collected 25 assists in 183 career NHL games with the Canadiens, Arizona Coyotes and Stars.
The Flames will visit the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night.
