It was one of the largest slums in Europe. The Calais “jungle” (Pas-de-Calais) had finally been dismantled. Five years later, what about the situation? France Télévisions investigated.
Five years ago, the “jungle” of Calais (Pas-de-Calais) was one of the largest slums in Europe, spread over several hectares. It had been dismantled to drive migrants to other regions of France. Despite everything, Sunday October 24, there are still people in exile scattered all over the coast. They hope to join the United Kingdom. Their number is on the rise: in 2020, they were 9,951 migrants who tried to cross the Channel. In 2021, that number rises to 18,000 people.
Every day, police operations take place to disperse the migrants so that they do not settle in Calais. Faced with this situation, the associations point the finger at a situation considered inhuman and which would be worse than at the time of the “jungle”. Co-founder of the Utopia 56 association, Yann Manzi denounces a “continuous manhunt”. For his part, Pierre-Henri Dumont, LR deputy for Pas-de-Calais, explains that “The situation has nothing to do with it. It remains complicated, it remains dramatic in some respects but it is not worse than five years ago.”
