Is support from Western countries likely to wane over the next few months?
“THE time does not work for Ukraine”explained Dominique de Villepin, who reacted to a recent poll which shows that only 48% of Americans are in favor of their country’s support for Ukraine. “Time is not on Europe’s side either”added the former Prime Minister, who felt that it was necessary “play for time” against Russia.
What form could a Ukrainian victory take?
Caroline Roux questioned her guests on the question of a victory for Ukraine and the form it could take. Dominique de Villepin recalled that Ukraine considers that Crimea must return to its midst. Anna Colin Lebedev, she stressed that the priority of Ukrainians “is to liberate the territories occupied by Russia” and that’“a ceasefire in these territories would be unbearable”. The analysis made Bruno Tertrais react, who recalled that “the abduction of 6,000 children” was part of “unpardonable crimes” of Russia.
Could Vladimir Putin be weakened by the conflict?
Is the Russian regime weakened internally? Not necessarily according to the experts. Anna Colin Lebedev notably nuanced the angry message of mothers of soldiers addressed to Vladimir Putin. The researcher felt that it is especially the political elites who are bothered by the conflict in Ukraine. After the testimony of the Russian journalist Marina Ovsiannikova, a refugee in France, the expert considered that it should not be believed that the Russian population “massively supported the Russian offensive”. Bruno Tertrais, he wondered about the future of Russia in the long term and in particular the impact of sanctions.
How to explain the difficulty of the Europeans to produce ammunition?
Should we fear a shortage of ammunition in Europe, as the fear kyiv? “We are facing, for the first time since the First World War, a high intensity conflict on the European continent”explained Alexandra de Hoop Scheffer. “The production lines for this type of weapon have almost been shut down”underlined the specialist.
