The presidential election is in 40 days. But to be able to vote for the future President of the Republic, in the first and second rounds, on April 10 and 24, you must be over 18 and be registered on the electoral lists.
Franceinfo explains the steps to follow to register in time on the electoral lists of your municipality and therefore be certain of being able to fulfill your duty as a citizen.
1How to register on the electoral lists?
To vote in the presidential election on 10 and 24 April, online registration is still possible on the site inscriptionelectorale.service-public.fr or by sending a document by post (form that can be downloaded online) to the town hall of the municipality in which you wish to be registered.
Whether your request is made online or physically at the town hall, you will be asked for three documents: an identity document, a rent receipt of less than three months justifying your residence in the municipality and a Cerfa document to complete to formalize your procedure. .
Attention, for this presidential election, online registration is possible until Wednesday, March 2. For the paper route, the town hall must have received this document on Friday March 4 for this registration to be valid.
2How do I verify that I am registered?
You have the possibility to check online if you are registered on the electoral lists of your municipality. To do this, simply go to the service-public.fr website and fill out a form in which you are asked to enter the name of your municipality, your surname and first names, your sex and your date of birth.
You then have to click on the purple tab “Check your voter information”and you will obtain, if you are properly registered, your national voter number to provide to give or receive a proxy, the address and number of your polling station.
If you notice an error or an oversight, it is advisable to contact the town hall of the municipality concerned to check your registration on the electoral lists and, if necessary, change your voting municipality.
3Is it possible to vote by correspondence or by proxy?
Repealed in 1975 in France, postal voting is still not permitted. Nor is it possible to vote online. On the other hand, a power of attorney is possible if you cannot go to the municipality where you are registered on polling day. Above all, you must appoint a proxy who will vote for you and know either his voter number and date of birth, or all his civil status data and his voting commune.
This agent must be registered in the same municipality as the one who makes the power of attorney (the principal) but can be attached to another polling station in this municipality. The power of attorney request can be made online with validation at a police station, gendarmerie or consulate.
It can also be established physically, by going directly to these places. The agent cannot have more than two powers of attorney, only one of which is established in France.
4What should I do if I have been removed from the lists?
To challenge the removal from the electoral lists, you must make a prior administrative appeal to the commission for the control of the electoral lists of the municipality from which you have been removed.
The control commission has 30 days to make its decision, then two days to notify the mayor and you. If the decision confirms the cancellation, a contentious appeal is then possible before the judicial court.
5What are the steps to take to vote if I have just moved?
You must either register with the town hall of your new municipality of residence, or declare your new address to the town hall of the municipality in which you are voting. If you move to the new municipality before Friday March 4, you can vote there in the presidential election on April 10 and 24. To do this, you must register on the electoral list of the new municipality of residence no later than March 4 (March 2 for online registration, see the first question).
The administration’s website summarizes the different scenarios and the procedure to follow in order to be able to vote in the spring.
