Police in Racine, a town on the shores of Lake Michigan, said “several shots (had) been fired” in the cemetery at 2:26 p.m. local time (7:26 p.m. GMT).

The shooting left five people injured and took place during the funeral of a man killed by police in May, his family, whose members were affected, told local channel TMJ4.

Da’Shontay King, a 37-year-old African-American, was shot dead by police on May 20 following a police stop as he was on the run and was seen with a gun in his hand .

Thursday’s shooting comes a day after another at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma (southeast), in which four people were killed, and less than ten days after the massacre of 19 children and two teachers at a school in Uvalde, Texas.

The obituary posted online by Da’Shontay King’s family confirms that his funeral was scheduled to take place at noon Thursday at the cemetery cited by police.

US President Joe Biden is due to speak at 7:30 p.m. (2330 GMT) to speak on “the need for Congress to pass common sense laws to combat the epidemic of gun violence”, announced the White House.

Since the Uvalde massacre, there have been more than twenty shootings with several victims in the United States, according to the association Gun violence archive.
