The announcement was made on Telegram by Alexei Smirnov, the governor of the Russian region of Kursk, which borders Ukraine. A Ukrainian drone attack killed five people, including two children, on Saturday, June 29, in the Russian village from Gorodishche, on the border between the two countries. “Two other family members are in serious condition”he added, specifying that the attack was carried out with a type drone “copter”a small device that can carry grenades or other explosives to be dropped on targets.

Both sides have made extensive use of drones, including larger explosive devices with ranges of up to hundreds of kilometers, since the conflict began in February 2022.

Ukraine has stepped up its attacks on Russian territory this year, targeting both energy sites it says supply the Russian military, and towns and villages just across the border.

Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a major new ground offensive in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine, in what he said was a goal of creating a “buffer” and to push back Ukrainian forces so that they protect the Belgorod region, bordering Russia, against shelling. The Kursk region, where Saturday’s attack took place, is further north, opposite the Ukrainian region of Sumy, controlled by kyiv.
