The American specialist in connected objects for sport Fitbit requested, on Wednesday March 2, the recall of approximately 1.7 million copies of its Ionic smart watch, the model presenting “risk of burns” for users. One million of these devices have been sold in the United States and 693,000 have been purchased abroad, specifies on its website the American agency in charge of the safety of consumer products (CPSC).
“The Ionic smartwatch’s lithium-ion battery can overheat, posing a burn hazard”, explains the agency. The recall process was conducted in coordination with Canadian and Mexican regulators. The CPSC says it has heard of at least 115 cases of watch overheating in the United States, 78 of them involving burns, including two third-degree burns and four second-degree burns.
The regulator is urging users to stop wearing the smartwatch immediately and contact Fitbit to return the device for a $299 refund. The Californian company stopped producing this model in 2020. It was sold until last December in the United States in department store chains such as Best Buy, Kohl’s or Target as well as on Amazon and on the Fitbit site.
