The fishermen returned to sea on Monday, April 3, after several days of blockages. Finally, Brussels will not ban bottom fishing in marine protected areas.

For a 15-meter trawler, these are the final preparations before departure. Nicolas Le Lay has restocked his ice stocks to preserve his fish, before going to sea. It has been over a week since he fished. In Guilvinec (Finistère), the 60 boats stopped voted for the resumption of activity on the morning of April 3. Fishermen are all relieved by the decision of the European Commission, which maintains bottom fishing in marine protected areas by 2030.

ecological nonsense

Otherwise, Nicolas would have had to cease his activity. To preserve biodiversity, France has marine protected areas which extend over a large part of the coast. Areas where fishing had to be limited because to fish, the ground is scraped with heavy gear, such as trawls. This destructive fishing technique weakens the resource. For ocean protection associations, the decline of Brussels is therefore seen as ecological nonsense.
