The cakes are becoming increasingly rare so that the entire fishing industry finds itself threatened. It is estimated that two thirds of these French crabs have disappeared in 4 years.

This morning of April 25 at the Croisic fish auction (Loire-Atlantique), there are few brown crabs on the stalls. In recent years, Victor Briois, fishmonger, sells less and less. “When I started with my dad 7-8 years ago, it was a flagship product”, he recalls. Less cake, the product is therefore more expensive. Consumers must adapt. But why are there fewer?

A less and less profitable business

Several avenues are being studied, such as that of a parasite that would decimate juvenile populations or the effects of global warming. The only certainty is that it upsets part of the profession. In the port, Renaud Perhirin is the skipper of one of the last two boats. According to him, with Brexit and the rise in diesel, the business is no longer profitable. “When we went out at the time, we were sure to have between 15 and 20 tons for a week, a week and a half, whereas there it is divided by three. So it’s very complicated and not very attractive to ‘a salary point of view’he says.
