Fishing and shellfish collecting are once again prohibited in several sectors of Loire-Atlantique, France Bleu Loire Océan reported Thursday, October 26. The cause: dinophysis algae present in shellfish. The prefecture’s decree published Thursday October 26 once again prohibits “fishing, collection, transport, storage and marketing of shellfish”on part of the coast, for individuals and professionals.
The prefecture specifies that this ban “follows the proliferation of the Dinophysis algae”. The body produces a toxin causing digestive problems in the consumer, such as vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain. The algae is not eliminated during cooking. The prefecture therefore advises not to eat and to destroy shellfish fished or collected in the six areas covered by the decree.
Similar orders in June and September
The areas concerned are as follows: Ile Dumet for all species, the Traict de Pen Bé for mussels and clams, from Pointe de Merquel to Port de la Turballe for all species, from Govelle Bay to the tip of Chemoulin for all species, between Préfailles and Moutiers-en-Retz, the offshore scallop bed, in the “Loire-North Atlantic” zone, the offshore bed for all species.
Similar decrees prohibiting the collection and fishing of shellfish on the Loire-Atlantique coast were published in June and September.
