Sunday, the day of the lords of the Olympics? This is what French sport will hope for with several great moments to experience on Sunday, July 28. Léon Marchand could begin his crazy harvest with, who knows, a new world record to his name. The chances of French medals are numerous with the French fencers and their female foil counterparts, Amandine Buchard and Walide Khyar on the tatamis of the Champ-de-Mars, or on the hill of Elancourt with the women’s mountain bike.
The three events not to be missed: mountain biking, epee, foil
Double podium for the French team on the mountain bike? Five times world champion in “cross-country”, Pauline Ferrand-Prevot is one of the strongest French chances of a medal of the day. Unless the other Frenchwoman involved, Loana Lecomte, steals the show, she who finished second in the last World Championships in Glasgow behind Ferrand-Prevot, and had won the test event on the same route.
The men’s épée could also be one of the hot spots of the day, with the defending champion Romain Cannone and Yannick Borel facing the Hungarian tandem Gergely Siklosi and Maté Koch, world No. 1 and 2.
On the women’s side, it is the individual foil that will have the honors. Ysaora Thibus, who has experienced complicated months due to a positive test for ostarine, will immediately face the world number 5, the Polish Julia Walczyk-Klimaszyk.
French to watch: Marchand, Buchard and the gym team
He will be the star of this Sunday in the French ranks. Big favorite and world record holder, Léon Marchand is expected in the 400m medley, the possible start of an exceptional harvest for the swimming star.
The French gymnastics team will enter the competition for the qualifications, where the United States team with Simone Biles will also be watching.
Competing in -52 kilos, judoka Amandine Buchard will want to confirm her consistency at the highest level, having reached the podium at the last three world championships.
The full program and the finals of the day
There will be something for everyone this Sunday. More of a team sports fan? The French women’s rugby 7s team is starting its Olympics with two matches on the programme against Brazil and Japan. From 5pm, a blue-white-red festival awaits you with the Blues of volleyball (5pm against Serbia), those of water polo (7:30pm against Hungary), field hockey (7:45pm against the Netherlands), then a superb double bill in the evening: the French footballers against Canada, and the handballers against the Netherlands at 9pm.
