No French victory in this third and final arrival in Italy, but the yellow jersey has changed shoulders again.
A great first! Between the first stage victory of the Eritrean Biniam Girmay on the Tour de France and the new change of leader in the general classification, the third stage between Piacenza and Turin (Italy) delivered a nice spectacle, Monday July 1st. As expected, the finale was decided in a sprint and Girmay, winner of a stage on the Giro and the Belgian classic Ghent-Wevelgem in 2022, surprised everyone. He thus becomes the first black African to win a stage on the Grande Boucle, the third on the continent after South Africans Daryl Impey and Rob Hunter.
After a hilly start to the first two stages marked by French victories, the peloton was treated to a flatter stage this time. Everything was decided in a massive sprint, while a big fall occurred less than three kilometers from the finish line. The Belgian Jasper Philipsen was notably a victim. For his part, Richard Carapaz has become the first Ecuadorian to wear the yellow jersey of the Tour de France. He is ahead of Slovenian Tadej Pogacar in the cumulative places in the stages since they both have the same time.
