First day without medals for Canadian athletes at Paris Olympics

For the first time since the start of the Paris Olympics, no Canadian stood on the podium on a day of competition. That doesn’t mean, however, that some athletes haven’t put themselves in position to do so on the coming days.

After finishing third in the 10-metre platform individual heats, Caeli McKay placed seventh in the semi-final to earn her spot in the final in that discipline.

The top 12 divers will advance to the final, which will take place on Tuesday at the Olympic Aquatics Centre.

McKay, of Calgary, scored 308.85 in the semifinals, 16 points below his first-round qualifying score.

Ottawa’s Kate Miller was eliminated in the preliminaries. The 19-year-old diver finished in 20th place with 266.30 points, while the top 18 divers advanced to the semi-finals.

McKay and Miller finished fourth in the synchronized 10-meter platform event last Wednesday.

At the Stade de France, Andre De Grasse pulled himself together after missing out on qualifying for the men’s 100 metres final on Sunday.

The 29-year-old Ontarian earned his ticket to the semi-finals of the 200m with a time of 20.30 seconds, the second best in his heat.

De Grasse is the reigning Olympic champion in the discipline, having set a personal best of 19.62 seconds at the 2021 Tokyo Games.

In the women’s pole vault, Alysha Newman cleared 4.55 metres to finish fifth in her group and advance to the final. Her compatriot Anicka Newell cleared 4.40 metres, but it was not enough to advance to the final.

In addition, the representative of the maple leaf Zoe Sherar finished 36the in the 400 meters, with a time of 51.97 seconds, and Lauren Gale recorded the 43e time, in 53.13 seconds. They will have to go through the repechage if they wish to qualify for the semi-finals.

Jean-Simon Desgagnés qualified for the men’s 3000m steeplechase final.

The 26-year-old Quebecer finished fifth in his heat with a time of 8:25.28. He took last place in his heat, giving access to the final, which will take place on Wednesday.

In the women’s 200 metres, Audrey Leduc and Jacqueline Madogo failed to qualify for the final of the event. Leduc finished sixth in her semifinal, in 22.68 seconds, while Madogo finished seventh in hers, in 22.81. Madogo did, however, set a personal best in the repechage earlier in the day.

Elsewhere, Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson advanced to the quarterfinals of the beach volleyball tournament after upsetting Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss.

Humana-Paredes and Wilkerson, both of Toronto, won both sets by scores of 21-19 and 21-18 against the Americans, ranked second in the world.

The Canadian women’s 3×3 basketball team had less success against the Americans, losing 16-13 in the bronze medal game.

In women’s freestyle wrestling in the 68 kilograms category, Linda Morais lost 8-2 to Nigeria’s Blessing Oborududu in the round of 16. Her journey is therefore over.

In Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, in track cycling, Sarah Orban, Lauriane Genest and Kelsey Mitchell took eighth and final place in the women’s team sprint event. In the team pursuit, Canadians Dylan Bibic, Mathias Guillemette, Michael Foley and Carson Mattern qualified for the next round.

Finally, in artistic swimming, Canada placed fifth in the technical routine.
