It’s a first in Europe: Mpox, a new variant of monkeypox, has been discovered in Sweden. Where is the epidemic? We take stock.

Since the beginning of the year, the Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded 548 deaths due to this virus, Mpox, better known as monkeypox. A growing epidemic, which has led the World Health Organization to trigger its highest level of global alert. In the village of Mpenda, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, while 80 to 90% of patients have been cured, many cases have been recorded. The rapid spread of the virus is explained by the fact that it is not only transmitted through direct contact.

Monkeypox is now present in droplets, in the air and on objects touched by infected people. In addition, this variant causes more severe symptoms. While a first case has just been discovered in Europe, a pharmaceutical laboratory has said it is ready to produce up to 10 million doses of vaccine until 2025.
