The threat of fire weighs on the forests. To limit the risks as much as possible, six massifs are forbidden to access in the Var. Brigades ensure their surveillance.

In Fréjus (Var), volunteers watch the entrance to the Esterel massif. With the drought, the risk of fire is now considered very severe. Signs prohibiting access to pedestrians have even been installed. Provisions rather accepted. “It’s normal, with all that’s going on, fires etc, it’s still better to be careful like that“, thinks a man. But for cyclists in the region, the restrictions are already starting to weigh.

Thousands of hectares scrutinized

Those who walk in the closed massifs risk a fine of 135 euros. Above all, they could prevent the firefighters from intervening, especially with the Canadairs who could not drop their water. Since the beginning of the summer, whether on foot or by car, volunteers have also been combing through thousands of hectares in the Var. “We are very focused, we constantly look away, around us, to see if we see anything, if we do not see a smoke“, says Robert Martina, president of the municipal forest committee.
