Since the beginning of the year, 7 million hectares of forest have burned in Canada. The clouds of smoke crossed the Atlantic and arrived in France on Monday June 26. What are the risks ? Response elements.
A red sun struggles to pierce the sky of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, disturbed by a cloud of smoke, coming from Canada. “I poked my head out the window. I thought : ‘Is it the moon or the sun?‘“says a resident. It’s the sun. It is enveloped in a veil of toxic particles released by forest fires in Canada. This fog arrives, Monday, June 26, above France. “We already have some smoke that is already suspended over the country. […] From Wednesday, Thursday, we expect a higher concentration of particles”explains Ludovic Lagrange, Weather Solutions meteorologist.
Health risks
These particles are extremely fine and would have health consequences. The doctor Clairelyn Dupin, pulmonologist, indicates: “The problem with these microparticles is that the smaller they are, the further they go in the body, especially in the respiratory tract. In patients who are asthmatic or who have chronic bronchitis, it will be able to generate aggravations of these diseases. In Canada, smoke engulfs Montreal, which beats a sad record: that of the most polluted city in the world. Since the beginning of January, more than 7 million hectares have burned.
