In the Gard, 600 firefighters are on the alert in fear of a resumption of the fires, which ravaged, Monday, June 13, 200 hectares. The conditions remained very unfavorable on Tuesday with heat, drought and wind.
As in the middle of August, high plumes of smoke were visible in the sky of Lozère on Tuesday June 14. Only canadairs could easily access the area. With the gusts of wind, the fire jumped from treetop to treetop. In total, 470 hectares of forest burned in the town of Mas-Saint-Chély (Lozère), and the fire is still not fixed. A little further south, in the Gard, the last 48 hours have been devastating.
In Serviers-et-Labaume (Gard), Monday June 13, around thirty fire starts were recorded and nearly 200 hectares were reduced to ashes. With the drought, the fire can start again at any moment. Small sparks even turn into small fires in a few seconds. So every minute counts. “There are still woods which are very hot, which are incandescent without being seen. At some point, it encounters materials which have not yet burned, and which can burn. It ignites, and it starts again”explains Lieutenant-Colonel Benoît Maurin, of the SDIS 26.
