In Australia, the spring, much warmer than average, raises fears of a very dangerous southern summer. On site, the authorities are preparing.
A week ago, Sydney (Australia) was shrouded in thick smoke. The direct consequence of forest fires deliberately started by firefighters, to reduce the fuel load in the wooded outskirts of the city, the most populated on the island. The coming summer could be one of all dangers, with exceptionally hot temperatures.
The authorities take the lead
Rob Rogers of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service (FRS) says “very concerned about the strengthening winds”. Once again, Australia is bearing the brunt of the effects of climate change, worsened in 2023 by the appearance of the El Niño phenomenon, which increases the risk of drought. After the warmest winter recorded since 1910, and an austral spring which recorded temperatures well above average, the authorities preferred to take the lead, sending home the most exposed schoolchildren.
